Supporting people with disability to have their say

Department of Social Services

Announced in 2019, the Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People is a huge step forward in ensuring people with disability live free from violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation. It’s vital that people with disability are supported to have their say – and know where to turn to find help. That’s where we come in.

The brief

To support people with disability, their families and carers and anyone effected by the Royal Commission, the Australian Government are providing counselling and advocacy support through the National Disability Advocacy Program and contracted provider, the Blue Knot Foundation. Our job was to create simple but compelling assets to enable promotion of the counselling and advocacy support services to the target audience.

The good

While the assets required could be classified as standard — factsheets, posters and brochures etc, the creative was anything but. Given the nature of the brief, it was critical that the creative was developed to be simple and explanatory, while taking care not to patronise. While most often creative is typically crafted to be campaignable, this brief was unique, in that its primary purpose was to inform and educate individuals. Messaging was crafted to explain complex content e.g. what is counselling and what is advocacy in the context of the Disability Royal Commission.

The impact

The Royal Commission is ongoing until late 2023 but hundreds of people with disability have already come forwards as witnesses. We’re proud of the role we have played in the campaign so far and are passionate about supporting all people with disability to have their say.

We created a range of materials including factsheets, posters and brochures that were simple and explanatory, while taking care not to patronise.

We undertook all of the casting for the project, taking care to ensure that everyone featured were real people with disability.

The goal of all of our assets was to make people with disability feel supported to tell their stories.

Simple animations were used to support our messaging and appeal to a wide audience.
